Window Boarding in Staines
A broken window leaves a room open to rain, draughts and anyone passing. Our window boarding service in Staines covers that opening with a properly cut and fixed board, so the property is weathertight and secure until the glass is replaced. We board up broken windows in houses, flats, shops and offices across the town. A person answers the phone 24 hours a day, so you can call as soon as you find the damage.
When window boarding is the right step
Boarding is the right step when a pane is cracked through, smashed or missing, or when the frame can no longer be trusted to keep the window shut. Common causes are:
- a break-in, or an attempted one, through a ground-floor window
- a stone, ball or bird strike
- storm damage or a falling branch
- glass failing in an old or neglected frame
- a window damaged while the property sits empty
If the glass is still in place and only lightly cracked, it may not need boarding at all. Tell us what you can see on the call and we’ll give you an honest view.
If the damage is to a door or its frame, see our page on door boarding and securing forced doors. Shop windows and full glazed frontages are covered under shopfront boarding, because large panes and trading premises need a different approach.
How to secure a broken window in Staines before we arrive
The safest first step is to leave the glass alone and keep people away from it.
- Keep clear of broken glass. Don’t pull loose shards out of the frame. They can drop without warning.
- Close the room off if you can, and keep children and pets out.
- Don’t climb to reach an upstairs window, and don’t lean out of one to inspect the damage.
- Photograph the damage from a safe spot if you can. Insurers find these photos useful.
- After a break-in, report it to the police, keep the crime reference number and contact your insurer.
Once you’ve done those things, there’s nothing more you need to do to the window. We make it safe when we attend.
Materials and fixings
Most window boarding uses exterior-grade plywood, typically 18mm. It’s strong, it copes with the weather and it can be cut to fit the opening on site. For smaller openings, such as a toilet window or a single small pane, OSB can be suitable. The van carries boarding stock and fixings, so the board is measured and cut to your window rather than forced into place.
How the board is fixed depends on the frame and on how exposed the window is:
- Security or anti-tamper fixings are used where the window is easy to reach from outside, such as at ground level or on a quiet side elevation. They’re much harder to remove than standard screws.
- Non-destructive fixing is used where the frame allows it, to reduce extra damage to a frame that might otherwise be kept. This often matters for older timber windows.
Not every window needs every method. A small first-floor pane overlooking a garden is a different job from a large ground-floor window facing a footpath, and we’ll fit the method to the risk.
Older windows and damaged frames
Much of the surviving historic building stock in Staines dates from the 19th century. That includes the villas and smaller terraces around Knowle Green and the housing along London Road, Gresham Road and Kingston Road. Older timber frames like these can be softer or more fragile than modern ones, so we look carefully at where fixings can go.
Sometimes the frame itself is too damaged to hold a board. It may be split, rotten or forced out of its opening. In that case we explain the options before any work starts. Those options might include fixing into the surrounding reveal or brickwork, or covering a larger area. Your quote reflects whatever you agree to.
Upper floors and awkward access
Upstairs windows, bays, windows above extensions and windows over basements or steps all affect how the work is done. Ladder access, the ground below the window, and whether we can reach the opening from inside all change what’s involved. A safe photo taken from the ground, or from inside the room, helps us plan this on the call.
What happens on the visit
- The call. We ask for your postcode, the type and size of window, roughly how high it is, and whether the frame looks intact. We work out the arrival time from your postcode and give you a free, clear quote before any work starts.
- Making safe. On arrival we check the opening, then clear loose glass and debris from the frame and immediate area where that’s part of the agreed work.
- Boarding. We measure the opening, cut the board to fit and fix it using the method we discussed.
- Paperwork. You receive an itemised invoice, time-stamped before and after photographs, and a written statement of the work done.
We have over 10 years’ experience, and we’re fully insured (certificate available on request) and DBS-checked.
What you’re left with
You’re left with a covered, secure window opening that keeps the weather and intruders out, plus a clear record of what was done. Boarding is a make-safe. It gives you the time to arrange new glazing or a replacement window properly instead of in a rush. Your insurer decides what’s covered, and our insurance paperwork guide explains how the documents help with a claim.
What affects the quote
There are no fixed prices on this page because window jobs vary so much. The quote depends on:
- the number and size of the windows
- the height of the windows and how easy they are to reach
- the board material and thickness
- whether security or anti-tamper fixings are needed
- whether the frame needs extra work before it can hold a board
- how much glass and debris needs making safe
Our pricing page explains each of these in more detail.
